“I spoke with Colombian President Gustavo Petro and we agreed to soon hold a binational meeting at the level of heads of state to continue advancing key issues on the economic, energy and security agenda, within the framework of strengthening cooperation and relations of respect and joint work between our two countries,” she said.

“We continue promoting a relationship of understanding and shared benefits for the well-being of our peoples,” the Venezuelan acting president stressed.

In August 2022, President Nicolas Maduro announced the creation of a binational zone with Colombia, stretching from Castilletes, in northern Colombia, to the state of Tachira in southwestern Venezuela.

The purpose of the initiative was to use the shared border to strengthen security, trade and cross-border movement. “The objective is to consolidate a powerful zone of peace, coexistence and Colombian-Venezuelan unity,” Maduro said at the time.

Currently, the Colombia-Venezuela binational zone includes the Colombian departments of Norte de Santander, Cesar and La Guajira, along with the Venezuelan states of Tachira and Zulia. The binational zone is composed of three areas:

Area 1 (North): Includes the Tachira–Norte de Santander axis and extends toward La Guajira, focused on formal trade and safe mobility.

Area 2 (Apure): Encompasses the department of Arauca in Colombia and the state of Apure in Venezuela, with an emphasis on border cooperation.

Area 3 (Amazon): The Amazon border zone between Colombia and Venezuela.
