Five Colombians are accused of building fiberglass submarines for drug trafficking.

On Wednesday, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello informed that the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) seized 2,769 kilograms of marijuana and 77 kilograms of cocaine in Amazonas state, in southern Venezuela near the border with Brazil and Colombia.

In another operation, the FANB arrested two people in Falcon state for transporting 47.35 kilograms of marijuana and 3.25 kilograms of cocaine, according to FANB Operational Strategic Commander Domingo Hernandez Larez.

In Delta Amacuro state, the FANB destroyed six shipyards that served as logistical camps for the construction and repair of wooden and fiberglass boats linked to Colombian drug trafficking, Hernandez Larez said.

Five Colombian nationals were arrested. They allegedly worked as “specialists in the construction of fiberglass submarines.” At the site of the operation, troops found blueprints for building semi-submersibles, repair materials, mechanical parts, fuel and other logistical supplies.

A day earlier, Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez announced the deployment of larger vessels in Caribbean territorial waters to combat drug trafficking. The move is part of an expansion of Operation Relampago del Catatumbo, which sends troops to border regions with Colombia.

Padrino Lopez said the security operation, which began in January, is being reinforced following the creation of a binational “development and peace zone” between Venezuela and Colombia.

He also said the government will deploy aircraft, helicopters, surveillance and intelligence systems, and reconnaissance units. About 15,000 troops will patrol 851 kilometers of the 2,219-kilometer border shared by Venezuela and Colombia.
