Venezuela’s catching prospect Ethan Salas made Major League Baseball history on September 17, becoming the youngest catcher ever to hit two home runs in a single game, powering the San Diego Padres to a 9-3 win over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in just his ninth career appearance.


Ethan Salas, the Venezuelan prospect signed by the San Diego Padres for $5.6 million in 2023, has made a historic impact in the Major League Baseball (MLB). In just his ninth game since debuting on September 2, Salas set a new record by hitting two home runs in a single game, becoming the youngest catcher to achieve this feat.

On September 17, Salas faced the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Batting ninth, he hit his first career home run in the second inning, sending a 93 mph fastball from Mason Adams over the central field fence. In the fifth inning, he added another home run off a 96 mph pitch from Nick Frasso.

At 20 years and 107 days old, Salas broke the record set by Butch Wynegar in 1976 and surpassed Joe Mauer’s achievement in 2004.

Salas’ performance was crucial in the San Padres’ 9-3 victory. He scored two runs and drove in three, showcasing his offensive prowess. Manager Craig Stammen’s decision to bat him ninth paid off, as Salas delivered in clutch moments.
