On Wednesday, the Babiito clan announced that television journalist Edward Kijanangoma was chosen as the new monarch of the Kingdom of Tooro, following the death of Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who had ascended the throne at the age of three.

Kijanangoma worked as presenter and editor for the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) and is the grandson of King George David Rukidi Kamurasi III, who reigned in Tooro from 1929 to 1965. He is also the son of Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma, brother of the previous King Kaboyo Olimi III.

According to local media, the Babiito clan announced the appointment at Karuziika Palace amid disagreements over the succession to the deceased monarch.

Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire, Prime Minister of Tooro, indicated that Oyo Nyimba had left a will outlining his wishes regarding the succession, which has generated internal disputes within the kingdom.

The Minister first requested the burial of the deceased monarch, who died at age 34 from cancer in the United States. Queen Mother Best Kemigisa also requested the burial before discussing the succession and criticized the security deployment at the palace, which she described as “house arrest.”

The clan committee had previously elected football goalkeeper George Desmond Kamurasi, captain of the London-based South East Dons team, who declined the position due to personal responsibilities.

The Kingdom of Tooro, with its capital at Fort Portal, is one of the five traditional kingdoms recognized by the Ugandan Constitution and restored in 1995 by President Yoweri Museveni without political powers.
