Waving Argentinian flags, holding signs, and chanting “Cristina free!”, Peronist supporters marched to the apartment at San José 1111, in the Constitución neighborhood of Buenos Aires, to demand the freedom of the Justicialist Party leader and denounce the judicial persecution she has faced.
Accompanied by Buenos Aires Province congressional candidate and former Defense Minister Jorge Taiana, the former president stepped out onto her balcony shortly after 3:00 p.m. local time to greet the crowd and sing along as they chanted the popular slogan “We will return!”
Protesters called for an end to her disqualification, imposed after she was sentenced on June 10 to six years in prison and a lifetime ban from holding public office in the so-called “Vialidad Case,” for alleged fraudulent administration during her presidency.
Among the demonstrators was Buenos Aires Province governor Axel Kicillof, who stated on social media: “With every day that Cristina remains detained, Argentina becomes a more unjust country and its democracy grows weaker.”
Kicillof went on to condemn repressive policies, the criminalization of protest, and the demonization of critical journalism under President Javier Milei’s administration.
However, he stressed that despite the imprisonment and disqualification of Peronism’s main leader, “they could not and will not break her.”
