Sweden defeated Tunisia 5‑1 on Sunday at Monterrey Stadium in their Group F opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Yasin Ayari scoring two goals and Viktor Gyökeres also playing a key role.
The nordic nation returned to the tournament after an eight‑year absence and claimed the group lead alongside Japan and the Netherlands, who drew 2‑2 on the same day, according to match reports.

Ayari opened the scoring in the 7th minute but did not celebrate out of respect for his Tunisian heritage through his father. Alexander Isak made it 2‑0 in the 30th minute. Omar Rekik pulled one back for Tunisia in the 42nd, cutting the lead to 2‑1. Gyökeres restored Sweden’s two‑goal advantage in the 59th minute.
Mattias Svanberg, who had been on the pitch for less than a minute after entering as a substitute, scored Sweden’s fourth goal in the 84th minute.
The Swedes demonstrated clear superiority over the African side throughout the 90 minutes.
