The President noted that Mexico will continue to send humanitarian assistance to the island to help address the economic and energy challenges stemming from the intensification of the U.S. blockade. She also affirmed that this policy reflects the tradition of fraternity and cooperation that characterizes Mexican foreign policy.
Furthermore, Sheinbaum underscored that this support for the Cuban people aligns with the principle of the self-determination of peoples, as well as with Mexico’s commitment to peace and international solidarity.

She also referenced a message posted on social media by former Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who expressed concern about the situation in Cuba and called on citizens to contribute to a fundraising effort supporting the Cuban people through the civil association Humanidad con América Latina.

“The day before, President López Obrador wrote on his social media: ‘I feel deeply hurt by what is happening to the people of Cuba,’ because for many years the United States and other countries imposed a blockade that does not allow products to reach the island,” Sheinbaum said.

The President noted that the call reflects the solidarity and “greatness of heart” of the Mexican people, and maintained that anyone wishing to offer support is free to do so, while reiterating that Mexico will continue to stand by the Cuban people.

According to the Mexican president, recent measures have further tightened those restrictions, particularly affecting the supply of petroleum. “Recently they imposed another blockade to prevent oil from reaching the island. Our brothers and sisters are suffering, and it is a brotherly, close people,” she stated.

Sheinbaum said Mexico decided to maintain assistance despite the difficulties involved in transporting fuel. “We decided that even when it was difficult to send oil, we would continue sending it,” she said.

The president stressed that Mexico’s position is grounded in humanitarian principles and in a tradition of solidarity, regardless of differing political views about the Cuban government. “Some say, ‘I do not agree with the government of Cuba.’ That is fine, but that should not cause the people to suffer,” Sheinbaum said.

“That speaks to the generosity of the Mexican people. We will continue supporting the people of Cuba from the government, and anyone who wants to help can do so,” she added.

The event was attended by the governor of Nayarit, Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero, as well as Mexico’s Secretary of Women, Citlalli Hernández Mora, and Secretary of Welfare, Ariadna Montiel Reyes, along with other federal and local officials.

Navarro thanked the president for her visit and said that Sheinbaum has defended Mexico’s sovereignty and territory internationally “without shouting and without threats.”

The remarks came during the final event of Sheinbaum’s visit to Nayarit, where federal and local authorities participated in the social program activity.
