Spain registered its highest heat-related mortality on record with an estimated 5,232 deaths between May 15 and August 31, according to the national daily mortality monitoring system.
The summer of 2026 has left Spain grappling with its highest heat mortality figure since the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) began operating in 2015.
The significant rise in heat-related deaths reflects not only the intensity of the heat experienced this summer but also the overall trend of increasing temperatures and heat waves across Europe, leading to a public health crisis that necessitates immediate intervention.

The monitoring estimated 5,232 deaths linked to high temperatures in the country between May 15 and August 31, a figure that will likely prompt new discussions on climate policies and public health measures, meanwhile factors such as air pollution, socioeconomic status, and access to healthcare all play crucial roles.
The Daily Mortality Monitoring System’s data is built with statistical models that cross-reference daily registered deaths with thermal thresholds. This method allows researchers to calculate how many deaths can be linked to heat in each season. Continuous monitoring and data collection are essential for understanding trends and improving response strategies for future heat waves.
The new mark surpasses both previous peaks, indicating a worrying trend in heat-related mortality. In 2022, the system counted 4,789 deaths from this cause, and in 2023 the figure dropped to 3,035. Both balances had headed the list of the deadliest summers until now, but the upward trajectory in 2026 calls for urgent action and preventive measures.
July registered 2,025 deaths attributable to extreme temperatures in Spain. August, for its part, carried 2,147 deaths up to the date of the report, the highest record of the two months. These statistics underline the urgent need for public awareness campaigns and community preparedness for extreme weather events.
Elderly Hardest Hit
Spain’s extreme heat hit hard during the summer months and affected, above all, the eldest age groups. This demographic is particularly vulnerable due to physiological changes with age and a higher likelihood of comorbidities. The elderly population, often with pre-existing health conditions, faces the highest risk, emphasizing the need for targeted health interventions during heat waves.
A total of 96.4% of the victims, 5,048 people, were over 65 years old. Within that group, 3,256 deaths correspond to those over 85 years old, about 62% of the total estimate, while 60 percent of the deaths were women. This demographic reality also highlights the need for specialized care and preventive measures tailored to older adults during heat waves.
The 2026 record remains, however, below the 2003 episode, when calculations of the time estimated about 13,000 deaths in the country. The August figure remains provisional and could be adjusted when the system completes the records for the month. The final number may vary, although the heat mortality of the period already stands as the highest since 2015.

With September approaching and the thermometer still high, several local administrations expanded teleassistance and direct monitoring of the dependent population.
The record underscores a broader trend across southern Europe, where heat waves are arriving earlier, lasting longer, and affecting urban populations with less capacity to adapt.
Community-level interventions may include creating cooling centers, increasing water distribution, and ensuring vulnerable populations receive timely health alerts. Collaboration between local governments, health agencies, and community organizations is essential in mitigating the effects of heat.
Following this, Spain’s public health officials have called for reinforcing heat action plans, cooling shelters, and early warning systems before the next summer season begins.
