The attack also involved high-precision long-range ground and sea-based weapons, as well as combat drones. The targets included drone production facilities and energy infrastructure that supports the operation of Ukraine’s military-industrial complex.
The Oreshnik hypersonic missile is capable of reaching high speeds, according to media reports. In November 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Russia had successfully tested the missile system, hitting targets in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.
The Russian ministry said the raid was in response to an Ukrainian attack involving 91 long-range strike drones on Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region overnight into Dec. 30, 2025.
Russia used 36 missiles, including one hypersonic Oreshnik, and 242 unmanned aerial attack devices. The Ukrainian Air Force later acknowledged that the Russian missiles and drones managed to hit 19 different locations.
From 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and overnight, Russian forces launched thirteen Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles from the Bryansk region, 22 Kalibr cruise missiles from the waters of the Black Sea and one Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile from the Kapustin Yar range in the Astrakhan region.
In addition, Russia launched 242 Shahed, Gerbera and other attack drones from Kursk, Oryol, Milerovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Donetsk, as well as from Chauda and GvardÃiske on the Crimean peninsula.
The main target of this combined attack against critical infrastructure in Ukraine was the Kiev region, where at least four deaths and 25 injuries were reported, while Lviv was targeted for the first time by an Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile.
