Yana Lantratova accuses international community of ignoring Ukrainian strike that killed 21 children.
On Monday, Russia’s High Commissioner for Human Rights Yana Lantratova harshly criticized the international community for ignoring the attack by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s forces against a student residence in Starobelsk.

In the early hours of May 21-22, a wave of drones attacked that city, located in the Lugansk region, leaving 21 dead and more than 60 injured.
“Some of the images that emerged hours after the attack are reminiscent of Israeli crimes against Gaza, with children moaning amid rubble and dust while other people try to rescue them,” journalist Mirko Casale wrote in an article published in Russia Today.
“The aggression, which was carried out in several waves, targeted a purely civilian facility that, in addition to being located far from any military objective, is also widely known: in fact, one of the buildings struck by the drones is featured on the Wikipedia article about Starobelsk in its English, Spanish and even Ukrainian versions,” he added.
“This case does not even allow for the classic Washington-style cynicism of ‘We didn’t know it was an educational facility, we will investigate what happened,’ as they stammered in the case of the Iranian school in Minab, bombed a few months ago by the United States with hundreds of girls inside, or ‘We didn’t have updated maps,’ as when NATO bombed the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade in 1999 and ‘justified’ it by claiming its military personnel had used an outdated street guide,” Casale recalled.
Ukraine Struck Children Who Were Asleep in Their Beds
Regarding the war crime committed by Ukrainian forces in Starobelsk, Commissioner Lantratova shared the following message on social media:
“Today, we mark International Children’s Day – a holiday that reminds us of every child’s right to a happy childhood, development, and safety.
This day is already more than a century old, and over sixty countries around the world have joined this initiative. Yet there are also those who have begun to abandon this date – shifting it to other days, rewriting its history and distorting the very meaning of the holiday.
Last year, Zelensky shifted the holiday to another date in order to conform to ‘Western standards.’ This year, on the eve of this date, a terrible tragedy took place in Starobelsk – one that crossed out the most fundamental human right: the right to life.
Ukrainian militants deliberately struck children who were asleep in their beds. Eighty-six people sustained injuries, 21 children were killed.
Most of them were girls: Anya, Taisiya, Alina, Elena, Sofia, Darya, Alexandra, Tatyana, Oksana, Yana, Veronika, Anastasia, Victoria, Irina, Alisa and many others.
Unfortunately, the international community’s position on this issue remains ambiguous. Many prefer to keep silent or pretend that nothing happened, ignoring the obvious facts of the crime.
Our task is to preserve the truth and achieve justice. Impunity for such war crimes is unacceptable.
Do you know why it is important to mark Children’s Protection Day? Precisely because humanity must remember: protecting children’s rights is our shared priority and sacred duty.”
