Peru’s Public Prosecutor opened a preliminary investigation against Interim President for allegedly hiring 11 people illegally, raising charges of aggravated influence peddling and deepening scrutiny over government transparency.

The Peruvian Public Prosecutor’s Office launched a preliminary investigation on February 13 against Interim President Jose Enrique Jeri Ore for the alleged illegal hiring of 11 people to fill government positions.

According to journalistic investigations, nine of those hired work in the presidential office and two in other government offices, predominantly young women with direct personal ties to the President.

The appointments allegedly bypassed the selection processes established by law, and those appointed reportedly lack the education and professional experience to support their positions.

Text reads: “The Public Prosecutor’s Office opens a preliminary investigation against José Jerí for the alleged crime of influence peddling, a criminal offense provided for and sanctioned in the second paragraph of article 400 of the Penal Code, as an offense against the State. The time limit for preliminary investigation is 90 days.”

The Attorney General scheduled an interrogation for March 2 in which the president will have to “present his corresponding defense regarding the charges against him.”

Meanwhile, Jeri faces another investigation for acts of corruption stemming from secret meetings with foreign businesspeople who have commercial ties with the Peruvian state.

The Public Prosecutor’s preliminary investigation seeks to determine whether there was aggravated influence peddling in appointments within the presidential circle, in a context of growing scrutiny regarding transparency in Peruvian Government management.
