The Palestinian-Spanish activist Saif Abukeshek is in good health, although in a state of ‘shock’, after being arrested by Israel last Thursday in international waters and has started a hunger strike.
The Spanish consulate in Tel Aviv contacted Abukeshek, who was transferred to Israel from waters near Greece during his participation in the Global Sumud Flotilla along with Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila. The meeting confirmed that Abukeshek is in a “correct” state of health, despite presenting “small wounds”.
Global Sumud Flotilla Denounces Israeli Interception in International Waters: Palestinian-Spanish Activist Saif Abukeshek, Arrested by Israel, Starts Hunger StrikeThe meeting between the consulate staff and Saif lasted no more than ten minutes and served to confirm that he is in a “correct” state of health, despite presenting some “small wounds”.
Saif did not intend to reach Gaza with the Global Sumud Flotilla to avoid facing a dangerous situation and that he was sailing in a boat that served as observation, according to Sally, his wife.
His will was to provide logistical services, as he did in the first flotilla that set sail from Barcelona a few months ago, when he only advanced to an Italian port and did not continue the trip beyond.
“He is in a state of shock. He regretted that yesterday was the birthday of one of his daughters and that he could not even call her to congratulate her,” lamented Sally.
Sally has demanded the release of Saif, who was born in the Askar refugee camp, in Nablus, and has been living in Barcelona for years with his wife and their three children. “He is just a humanitarian activist, who has always worked to defend the Palestinian people,” his wife said.
Along these lines, she has appealed to the Spanish Government to do “everything possible” to secure his release, and has asked civil society to put pressure with protests in front of Israeli embassies and consulates to put an end to “the violence that Israel exerts on Palestinian citizens”.
