Venezuela on Saturday expressed concern over an oil spill originating in Trinidad and Tobago that has affected the Gulf of Paria and coastal areas in the eastern states of Sucre and Delta Amacuro.

In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Minister Yván Gil Pinto said preliminary technical reports confirmed “impacts on marine areas, coastlines, sensitive ecosystems and Venezuelan fishing communities.”
According to the statement, assessments conducted by Venezuelan authorities identified critical risks to mangroves, wetlands and marine wildlife in the affected areas. The spill also threatens hydrobiological resources considered strategic for food security and ecological stability in the region.
Text Reads: The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela expresses its concern to the international community regarding the hydrocarbon spill originating from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, which has caused severe environmental damage in the Gulf of Paria and the coastal areas of the states of Sucre and Delta Amacuro. Preliminary technical reports confirm impacts on marine areas, coastlines, sensitive ecosystems, and communities.
Authorities reported “direct impacts on vulnerable species and ecosystems of high environmental sensitivity,” the statement added.
The Venezuelan government instructed the Foreign Ministry to immediately request all relevant information from Trinidad and Tobago regarding the incident.
Caracas is also demanding the presentation of a mitigation and containment plan, as well as compliance with obligations established under international environmental law and the urgent implementation of reparatory measures for the damage caused.
The government said it would continue deploying actions aimed at protecting affected ecosystems and safeguarding impacted communities in the region.
