On Wednesday, the Nicaraguan government sent its condolences and solidarity to China following the flash floods that struck both sides of the border between Nepal and Tibet (Xizang, China), leaving at least 98 dead and hundreds missing, including tourists.

In a message addressed to President Xi Jinping, Nicaraguan co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo expressed their “deep sadness” over the tragedy and sent “sincere condolences and prayers for the comfort of the affected families.”

The floods swept away bridges, cut off roads, and affected hydroelectric projects. Most of the confirmed victims are in Nepal, where the Prime Minister’s Office reported the recovery of 95 bodies.

An official report indicated that 484 tourists (391 foreigners and 93 Nepalese) remained unaccounted for, along with 44 military personnel, 28 police officers, 13 members of the Armed Forces Police, and 60 workers from hydroelectric projects.

The message from Managua emphasized that “in this powerful, fraternal, and supportive country, responses are immediate and normalcy is quickly restored despite the pain and sorrow.”

The United Nations (UN) explained that the humanitarian community is already providing emergency assistance and remains on standby to provide additional support as the needs become clearer. 

Meanwhile, UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal Lila Pieters Yahia is coordinating relief efforts with partners in support of the government-led response “in an effort to meet what will clearly be massive humanitarian need.”
