Two Mexican Navy ships set sail from the port of Veracruz with more than 718 tons of humanitarian aid for Venezuela, in the second maritime shipment destined to address needs arising from the earthquakes that affected that country in June.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the Ministry of the Navy reported in a joint statement that the ships ‘ARM Papaloapan’ and ‘ARM Huasteco’ departed on July 31, by instruction of President Claudia Sheinbaum, to transport assistance supplies to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

The largest shipment travels in the ‘ARM Papaloapan’, which transports approximately 684 tons of supplies, while the ‘ARM Huasteco’ carries another 34.5 tons, bringing the total to more than 718 tons, according to the agencies.

The operation was carried out in coordination between the SRE, Marina, the Ministry of Interior, the Administration of the National Port System Veracruz and various federal authorities, responsible for embarkation and transfer tasks.

Sheinbaum reported on the shipment on Friday, when she defended foreign aid as an expression of Mexican solidarity.

The president asked from the National Palace, in the Mexican capital, that “solidarity always reflect our country” and highlighted Mexico’s fraternity in supporting other peoples in the face of disasters.

The joint statement noted that with the shipment, Mexico reaffirms its “solidarity vocation”, its spirit of cooperation and its humanitarian tradition with the peoples of Latin America and the world who face situations of need.

This new transfer comes after a first maritime shipment that arrived on July 13 at the Venezuelan port of La Guaira, comprising the ships ‘ARM Isla Holbox’ and ‘ARM Huasteco’, with 2,003 cubic meters of humanitarian aid, equivalent to 388.42 tons.

That cargo included food, bottled water, personal hygiene items, medicines, medical supplies and four water purification plants, each with the capacity to produce 1,000 liters of purified water per hour.

Since the end of June, Mexico had also sent air assistance with specialized personnel, tools, medical supplies and support equipment, after the earthquakes of June 24 in Venezuela.
