A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck Colombia late Saturday, with the epicenter 14 kilometers from Totoró and 12 kilometers below the surface.

The earthquake was recorded at 11:37 p.m. Saturday by the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), which located the epicenter 14 kilometers from the municipality of Totoró, in the department of Cauca.

The quake occurred in the area the SGC identifies as the “Puracé Volcano Influence Area,” a geographic reference used by the agency to locate seismic events in that part of the Central Cordillera.

The SGC classified the earthquake as shallow, a designation it uses for tremors occurring less than 30 kilometers below the surface. Its reported depth was 12 kilometers.

Second earthquake in Totoró

The 4.3-magnitude quake was the second earthquake recorded by the SGC in Totoró on Saturday. The first, with a magnitude of 3.9, was also classified as shallow and occurred at 4:21 p.m., more than seven hours before the later event.

The SGC said the information in its “Updated Bulletin 1” remains subject to change. The bulletin is the agency’s first revision after its initial automated report, and the reported magnitude could increase or decrease by a few tenths as additional data from stations across the seismic monitoring network are incorporated.

The agency also reported eight other tremors in different parts of Colombia during the early hours and morning of Saturday, Aug. 29.

One of them was a magnitude 3.9 earthquake in Medio San Juan, among six seismic events recorded in the department of Chocó that day.
