During a live broadcast watched by nearly 700,000 people, the president reflected on the political significance of his return to power after losing the first round of voting. Lula maintained that his triumph coincided with political setbacks for right-wing leaders.
He mentioned Benjamin Netanyahu’s electoral defeat in Israel and said his victory foreshadowed the difficulties faced by Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the United States.
The Brazilian president said the main message of the election was the defense of national sovereignty. He added that Brazilians showed they would not accept being “anyone’s backyard,” an idea he repeatedly used during the campaign.
Furthermore, Lula criticized his political rival Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. He recalled that during campaign rallies, he displayed and kissed the Brazilian flag, while Flavio kissed the United States flag.
The president also addressed Bolsonaro’s departure for the United States after the election defeat. He stated that the senator sought protection in that country, since he faces legal proceedings for alleged money laundering.
Lula explained that the key to his electoral comeback was popular mobilization, especially among women, young people, and the elderly. He also admitted to feeling more responsibility during this term, considering he now has to meet the expectations of those who placed their trust in him again.
