The Argentinian judiciary has requested information from the mobile devices of President Javier Milei, his sister and Presidential General Secretary, Karina Milei, and thirteen others implicated in the $LIBRA cryptocurrency scam.
Federal prosecutor Eduardo Taiano, who is leading the investigation, filed a request — accessed by EFE on Wednesday — demanding “the entirety of the conversations” between Milei and his sister with officials and businesspeople involved in the launch of the crypto asset on February 14 of this year.
In the cases of businessman Mauricio Novelli and former head of the National Securities Commission, Sergio Morales, their cell phones had already been seized by the Argentine Federal Police.
Authorities have also requested access to the communications of several well-known figures in the cryptocurrency industry — including Manuel Terrones Godoy, Hayden Mark Davis, Julian Peh, Bartosz Lipinski, Charles Hoskinson, Sebastián Serrano, Arturo Osete Herraiz, Ahmed Faisal Hassan, Leandro Aranda, Marcelo Aranda, and Brooks Glenn Heard — all of whom are suspected of taking part in the $LIBRA operation.
Prosecutor Taiano formally submitted his request to the General Directorate of Investigations and Technological Support for Criminal Inquiry, seeking a detailed review of messages exchanged across WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn. Investigators were instructed to search for terms such as “crypto,” “cryptocurrency,” “token,” “memecoin,” “libra,” and “$libra,” among others.
Meanwhile, the congressional committee conducting a parallel investigation into the $LIBRA affair renewed its demand that Karina Milei appear to testify, after she ignored two previous summons. Lawmakers unanimously agreed to ask her to propose a date when a delegation could meet with her at the Executive Office to collect her statement.
The controversy traces back to February 14, when President Javier Milei publicly endorsed the launch of the $LIBRA cryptocurrency, describing it as a project intended to “finance entrepreneurs and small businesses in Argentina.” The token’s value initially surged but plummeted within hours. Following the collapse, thousands of investors reported heavy losses after buying in based on Milei’s now-deleted post — which was later replaced by another message in which he distanced himself from the initiative and denied any involvement.
The scandal has since sparked judicial inquiries in both Argentina and the United States, with investigators examining the roles of both the president and his sister.
