A Dominican man was shot and wounded by an ICE agent around 4:00 p.m. local time during an operation in New York’s Inwood neighborhood, prompting protests and demands for accountability from city and state officials.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, ICE agents were conducting a targeted operation to arrest the man, whom it described as an undocumented immigrant with a prior conviction for grand larceny and previous arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession. DHS also claimed he has links to the Trinitarios gang, which it blamed for the shooting of a Customs and Border Protection agent last year.

DHS and the New York Police Department said agents provided medical assistance immediately after the shooting, and the man was taken to a hospital where he remains conscious.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on X that the man was in his vehicle with a five-year-old child in the back seat when he was shot. According to initial reports, agents surrounded the man and the child before firing several times. The child was not injured. Mamdani also said he had called President Donald Trump to demand an end to ICE operations in the city.

After the shooting, dozens of people gathered near the scene, confronted federal agents and marched to the hospital where the wounded man was taken. Some blocked an intersection at the hospital entrance, carrying banners with the slogan “ICE OUT.”

Governor Kathy Hochul demanded explanations from federal authorities and expressed concern about the risk to the child, saying New Yorkers are outraged and immigrant communities are terrified, and that they are demanding answers. The New York Immigration Coalition called for a thorough investigation, the release of body camera footage and accountability.

The FBI and Homeland Security Investigations are handling the inquiry. The incident remains under investigation, according to federal authorities.
