Violence has flared again in northern Syria, with the Syrian Army and Kurdish Forces trading accusations over a lethal attack that has reignited tensions in the war-torn region.
The clash occurred in Aleppo province, an area known for its complex web of armed groups and competing interests. Both sides have presented conflicting accounts of the events, underscoring the fragile and volatile state of Syria’s ongoing conflict.

According to the Syrian Ministry of Defense, Kurdish Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched mortar and projectile attacks on several villages in eastern Aleppo, including Um Tina.
The Ministry categorically denied responsibility for the bombardment and accused the Kurdish forces of carrying out the assault themselves as a deliberate maneuver aimed at discrediting the Syrian government and falsely blaming the national armed forces.
This incident mirrors a similar attack reported on September 10, when two civilians were killed and three others injured, further highlighting the growing instability in the northern and northeastern regions of Syria. These areas remain zones of contact where a multitude of armed actors coexist, often clashing and complicating efforts toward peace and stability.
The Ministry of Defense reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Syria’s sovereignty and national stability against what it describes as ongoing “systematic aggressions” by Kurdish forces. This rhetoric reflects Damascus’s long-standing stance against Kurdish groups, which it accuses of undermining the country’s territorial integrity and collaborating with foreign powers.
Meanwhile, Israeli military actions have escalated in southern Syria, capitalizing on the power vacuum left by the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024. Israeli incursions have included airstrikes, military vehicle entries, and the detention of Syrian citizens in Quneitra and Daraa provinces.
Notably, Israeli troops entered the village of Ruwaihinah, detaining two Syrian citizens, while an airstrike in rural Damascus resulted in the death of several Syrian soldiers. These moves form part of wider Israeli operations intensified following the government’s downfall, reflecting Tel Aviv’s desire to consolidate control over strategic areas.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently disclosed plans to establish a demilitarized zone stretching from the occupied Golan Heights to the Suwayda governorate. This proposal signals a further entrenchment of Israeli influence in Syrian territory, exacerbating existing tensions and contravening previous agreements.
Furthermore, Israel has tightened its grip on the Syrian Golan Heights by absorbing the demilitarized separation zone established in the 1974 disengagement agreement. This expansionist move violates the terms originally agreed upon to maintain peace and prevent hostilities between Syria and Israel.
The Syrian conflict, now extending into its fourteenth year, remains one of the most complex and brutal crises globally. Multiple foreign actors with competing agendas continuously intervene, turning parts of the country into battlegrounds for proxy wars.
The accusations between the Syrian government and Kurdish forces emphasize the fragmented nature of Syria’s internal dynamics. Kurdish groups, often backed by Western powers, particularly the United States, have asserted autonomy in parts of northeastern Syria, provoking hostility from Damascus and its regional allies.
Israel’s military intensification in southern Syria reflects broader geopolitical calculations in the Middle East. The Syrian government’s weakening has emboldened Tel Aviv to act unilaterally, heightening the risk of broader confrontation and complicating prospects for a negotiated settlement to the conflict.
International voices have warned against escalations that could lead to wider regional instability. The United Nations continues to call for respect for Syria’s sovereignty and advocates for a political solution that addresses the legitimate concerns of all Syrians, including ethnic and sectarian minorities.
As the situation deteriorates, the Syrian people bear the brunt of violence, displacement, and economic hardship. Attacks like those reported this month only deepen humanitarian crises and undermine efforts toward reconstruction and peace.
Left-wing and anti-imperialist movements worldwide have expressed solidarity with the Syrian people and condemned foreign interventions that exacerbate the conflict. They emphasize the need for genuine sovereignty, non-interference, and respect for the self-determination of peoples caught in geopolitical struggles.
In this complex milieu, regional players like Russia and Iran continue to back the Syrian government, while the West and Israel support various opposition factions, resulting in a protracted stalemate. The recent exchange of accusations signals that despite changes in government and power balances, the intensity of conflict and suffering remains profound.
Ultimately, sustainable peace in Syria depends on respecting national sovereignty, fostering inclusive dialogue, and halting external meddling. The ongoing attacks and counter-claims highlight the urgent necessity for a renewed commitment to diplomacy and the protection of civilians.
This latest episode is a stark reminder of the fragile peace that Syria endures and the heavy costs of war, further urging the international community to prioritize peaceful solutions over military interventions and geopolitical agendas.
