United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres believes that U.S. military strikes against vessels in Caribbean waters contravene international law, his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, confirmed on Friday.

“That’s right,” Dujarric replied when asked if Guterres agreed with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, who had previously denounced that the US strikes constitute a violation of international humanitarian law.

Since August, Washington has deployed three destroyers, an amphibious assault ship, a missile cruiser, a nuclear submarine and some 4,500 marines to the Caribbean.

The missile attacks began in September against vessels suspected of being loaded with drugs in waters near Venezuela and spread to the eastern Pacific.

On Thursday, Donald Trump’s administration offered a briefing in Congress to legally justify the operations, but only invited GOP lawmakers.

High Commissioner Volker Türk called the attacks “extrajudicial executions,” noting that more than 60 people have been killed since the start of the operation. He demanded that they cease immediately, regardless of the crimes attributed to the victims.
