Carlos Queiroz severely criticized the refereeing after the Black Stars were denied a penalty and two red cards against the British team in Boston, keeping Ghana’s hopes alive for the next round of World Cup 2026.
The national football team coach of Ghana, Carlos Queiroz, denounced severe arbitration errors during a scoreless draw against England in Boston on June 23, claiming the video assistant referee failed to intervene.
The intense goalless draw between England and Ghana at the World Cup continues to generate profound repercussions in the international sporting community. The experienced Portuguese strategist of the African squad, Carlos Queiroz, launched harsh accusations against the officiating crew.

Queiroz sarcastically asserted that the video assistant referee (VAR) “was on vacation” and “went to grab a coffee” during the second half. He explained that his team was directly harmed by two crucial refereeing mistakes.
The first major controversy occurred in the 66th minute of the match. English goalkeeper Jordan Pickford rushed outside his penalty area and violently collided with Ghanaian forward Prince Adu without touching the ball. The experienced coach declared that the incident demanded an immediate red card for the goalkeeper. However, the refereeing staff ignored the action, which left the technical bench of the African team highly outraged.
The decision to award a free-kick to the English team after the clash was labeled as absurd by observers. The technical staff argued that the referee favored the European squad during this critical phase of the game.
Unpunished British Fouls
Only 12 minutes after the incident with the goalkeeper, the controversy restarted in the U.S. stadium. British defender Ezri Konsa brought down the same attacker, Prince Adu, inside the penalty area during a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
“It is a clear penalty and a red card”, Queiroz told reporters, meanwhile he questioned whether the match officials were the only individuals in the entire stadium who did not see the foul.
Meanwhile, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) maintained its traditional policy of silence regarding referee performances. Consequently, the international organization has refused to issue public declarations about the controversial match at Boston Stadium.
Experts Back Queiroz
International football analysts and former Premier League referees described the refereeing performance as highly unusual. They emphasized that the Honduran official, Said Martínez, whistled 38 fouls, which completely disrupted the natural flow of the match.
Arbitration specialists concluded that the VAR technicians possessed sufficient visual evidence to intervene. They affirmed that the video assistant should have corrected the main referee on both crucial decisions during the game.
Despite the deep frustration caused by the restrictive refereeing, the African squad remains optimistic. The single point keeps the Black Stars with solid mathematical chances of qualifying for the next round of the international tournament.
The representatives of the Ghanaian Football Association indicated they will focus entirely on preparing for the decisive final match of the group stage. They seek to overcome these obstacles and secure their qualification.
