Russell completed his lap in 1 minute, 32.274 seconds, beating Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and fellow Briton Lando Norris (McLaren), who finished second and third respectively.

Despite topping the timesheets, Russell will start the weekend with a penalty for changes to components of his car’s power unit, which will force him to start from the back of the grid.

Italian Andrea Antonelli (Mercedes), the championship leader, finished seventh on medium tires, while Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) finished sixth in his 250th Formula One Grand Prix.

Spaniards Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Carlos Sainz (Williams) finished fourteenth and fifteenth, respectively, in a session held in high temperatures and humidity.

Argentine Franco Colapinto (Alpine) recorded the nineteenth fastest time after completing 27 laps, while Mexican Sergio Perez (Cadillac) was near the back of the grid.

During the first part of the session, most drivers worked on hard tires, although in the final minutes they switched to medium and soft compounds to try for better times.
