CONAIE vows national resistance against a militarized crackdown on communities.

On Wednesday, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) issued a statement rejecting the actions carried out by state security forces under the orders of President Daniel Noboa.

After analyzing the violent incidents carried out by state security forces in recent days, the CONAIE Governing Council, in defense of Ecuador’s Indigenous peoples, decided the following:

“1. We reject the violent and atrocious repression being implemented by the government of Daniel Noboa in the province of Imbabura against the mobilized peoples of the country’s north, under the false pretext of entering with a “Humanitarian Convoy,” when in reality it was a “military advance” and a war strategy against our peoples.

During this action, the territories of several communities and nations were invaded, homes were raided without warrants issued by competent authorities, and serious human rights violations were committed, threatening the integrity and lives of community members.

2. We demand justice and accountability for these events. We call on international human rights organizations — including the United Nations, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), and the Organization of American States (OAS) — to intervene and stop the severe repression being carried out by the Ecuadorian government.

3. We reject the upcoming referendum and popular consultation. Our position is to say NO to this proposal, which seeks to establish an authoritarian regime to conceal the government’s inability to resolve Ecuador’s pressing economic, social, and security problems.

To achieve this, they intend to push for a Constituent Assembly designed to serve authoritarian and colonial interests, nullifying rights won through decades of struggle.

We reaffirm our consistent stance aligned with CONAIE’s political project, which is anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, anti-colonial, and a defender of collective rights, the rights of nature, labor rights, social rights, the human right to water, and the right to resistance.

4. We reorganize the CONAIE structure to facilitate active, leading, and organized participation in the national campaign for a NO vote in the referendum and popular consultation. This effort aims to strengthen unity among peoples, nationalities, and social sectors in defense of rights, democracy, and the self-determination of peoples. We reaffirm resistance in all territories.

5. We denounce the political and economic model of the national government, which seeks to impose an extractivist project contrary to human rights, aimed at dismantling the rule of law, plurinationality, and historical advances in social, environmental, and collective justice.

The government’s economic policies do not solve our country’s economic, social, and political crisis; on the contrary, they deepen inequality and divert attention from real national problems.

6. We organize a Humanitarian Convoy from Indigenous peoples and nationalities in support of the Imbabura communities, in coordination with the Red Cross and international human rights organizations.

7. We demand the release of those detained and full reparations for the wounded and deceased, as well as an independent investigation to determine responsibility for the serious human rights violations.

We denounce the commission of crimes against humanity by the Noboa administration and reserve the right to pursue all pertinent legal actions.

8. We coordinate a medical mission for the province of Imbabura, led by the health leaders within CONAIE’s organizational structure.”
