The match had concluded its regular 90 minutes without any goals, forcing the teams into an intense extra-time period where the Congolese team ultimately prevailed.
The sole goal of the crucial encounter arrived in the 100th minute courtesy of Burnley defender Axel Tuanzebe.
Extra-Time Decider
Under the guidance of coach Sébastien Desabre, the Congolese squad consistently controlled ball possession and forged the clearer scoring opportunities from the outset. On the left flank, Nathanael Mbuku effectively penetrated the Jamaican defense on several occasions, though his attempts narrowly missed the target. Meanwhile, on the right wing, Meschack Elia frequently outmaneuvered his markers, creating his most significant chance in the 37th minute with a powerful strike that goalkeeper Andre Blake skillfully denied, keeping the score level.
As the second half commenced, the African team maintained their offensive pressure. Veteran forward Cédric Bakambu and midfielder Edo Kayembe tested Blake with well-placed shots, but the Jamaican custodian proved resolute, pushing the match into extra time. The relentless efforts of DRC’s midfield and attack showcased their determination to break the deadlock and secure the much-coveted World Cup berth, demonstrating a clear tactical advantage throughout the game.
The decisive goal materialized early in the first period of extra time following a corner kick. Jamaican defender Joel Latibeaudiere misjudged his clearance attempt, leaving the ball perfectly positioned for Tuanzebe. The defender instinctively used his body to bundle the spherical into the net, igniting celebrations among the Congolese players and their supporters.
This historic goal cemented DRC’s return to elite international football, marking an end to over five decades of waiting, bringing immense pride to the nation and the entire African continent.
DRC’s Schedule in Group K
With their dramatic qualification, the Democratic Republic of Congo will now join Group K in the FIFA World Cup group stage. They will face formidable opponents: Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan.
This group promises a challenging yet exciting series of matches for the Leopards, who will be eager to prove their prowess on the world stage. The multi-host 2026 World Cup, spanning North America, offers a grand stage for their comeback.
