They described the DRC attacks as part of a ‘dynamic of total war.’
On Thursday, the March 23 Movement (M23) rebel group accused the army of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) of violating the ceasefire agreement reached in Doha by launching an offensive against its troops.

Lawrence Kanyuka, spokesperson for the Alliance of the Congo River/M23 (AFC/M23), called for international attention to the “violations” by the Congolese government, while the rebels described the attacks as part of a “dynamic of total war.”
After the offensive began with drone strikes in North Kivu, local news agencies speculated about the possible death of rebel military spokesperson Willy Ngoma. However, there has been no confirmation from either the AFC/M23 or the Congolese Army.
In this context, Goma City spokesman Kambere Muyisa Lumumba urged citizens not to rely on social media for information on M23 and to wait for an official statement from the Congolese authorities.
Clashes intensified in North Kivu, particularly in Masisi, between the army, its allied militias known as “Wazalendo” (patriots in Swahili), and the rebels, who regained control of villages such as Kasenyi and Luke.
The conflict continues amid tensions following the peace agreement signed in Washington on Dec. 4 2025, by Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Eastern DRC has suffered violence since 1998, fueled by clashes between rebel groups and the army, despite the deployment of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO).
