The Hurricane caused extensive damage, primarily due to the intense floodings.

On Monday, the Cuban National Defense Council informed that 45,282 homes were damaged by Hurricane Melissa, which struck the eastern part of the island last Wednesday. Currently, 120,000 people remain sheltered in evacuation centers or with relatives.

Granma Governor Yanetsy Terry stated that the greatest impact has been concentrated in the municipality of Rio Cauto, where the flooding caused by the Cauto River’s intense rise has begun to recede.

In the updated assessment, authorities confirmed that Cuba continues to have no deaths from Melissa. However, 1,552 schools were damaged, 200 of which have already been repaired.

In the health sector, 461 facilities were affected, including hospitals, polyclinics, doctor’s offices and pharmacies. Electricity service is starting to be restored in Las Tunas province, where power has reached 94.5% of customers.

Preliminary damage has been detected on 78,700 hectares of agriculture sectors, more than a half in banana plantations. The Hurricane overflowed reservoirs and caused landslides in mountainous areas, also destroying public infrastructure and crops.

Last Wednesday, Hurricane Melissa crossed the eastern tip of Cuba as a Category 3 hurricane, with winds of up to 200 kilometers per hour and rainfall accumulations of up to 400 millimeters, causing extensive damage.

In the eastern part of the country, road authorities reported that rehabilitation work continues on the affected routes and urged the public to stay informed through official channels and avoid unnecessary travel to the affected areas.
