Cuba is overseeing criminal proceedings against six people charged with terrorism following an armed infiltration attempt in terrritorial waters, reaffirming its commitment to defend national sovereignty and ensure due process under the law.


Cuban Attorney General’s Office is overseeing the criminal proceedings for the armed infiltration attempt that occurred on the morning of February, 25 in the northern part of Villa Clara province, with the purpose of carrying out terrorist acts against the country.

Six citizens have been formally charged with terrorism offenses as defined in the Cuban Penal Code.

The investigation was initiated by the Specialized Criminal Investigation Unit for Crimes Against State Security of the Ministry of the Interior, meanwhile the Attorney General’s Office ordered the defendants held in pretrial detention.

According to the official statement, “with respect for the rights and guarantees enshrined in the Constitution and the laws, the Attorney General’s Office will ensure due process, and upon completion of the investigations, will adopt the corresponding procedural decisions.”

The Cuban Attorney General’s Office announced that will continue to act in accordance with its constitutional mandate, within the framework of the law, in defense of the people and the institutions of the country. The agency maintains control of the criminal proceedings while the investigative procedures related to the state security case are completed.

Text reads: “The Office of the Attorney-General of the Republic monitors criminal proceedings conducted by the Specialized Body for Criminal Investigation of Crimes against State Security of the Ministry of the Interior, to investigate the attempted infiltration into national territory that occurred on the morning of February, 25 in the northern area of the province of Villa Clara, with the purpose of carrying out terrorist acts…”

According to the official report, on Wednesday morning, an illegal speedboat with a Florida registration (U.S. registration number FL7726SH) was detected approaching within one nautical mile of the area.

When a Cuban Border Guard vessel with five officers approached to identify the vessel, the illegal speedboat opened fire on the officers, resulting in the unit’s Commander being wounded and prompting a defensive response from the security forces.

As a result of the confrontation, four assailants were killed and six were wounded, after which they were evacuated and received medical attention.

Given the current challenges and in light of these events, Cuba has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its territorial waters, based on the principle that national defense is a fundamental pillar for the Cuban state in order to protect its sovereignty and stability in the region.
