Ronaldo made the announcement on social media, where he stated that “the time had come” to hand over the number seven jersey and make way for the new generations who will represent the Portuguese team.
In his message, he explained that the decision was especially difficult due to the emotional bond he maintained for more than two decades with the national team, which he also captained for a significant part of his career.
The announcement came just days after the Portuguese Football Federation’s Disciplinary Council sanctioned him with a 30-day suspension and a fine for leaving a national team training camp at the end of September.
Ronaldo’s departure was also marked by disagreements with coach Jorge Jesus. According to the player, the conflict arose after he did not participate in a match against Norway despite having warmed up for several minutes.
Ronaldo emphasized that he always tried to push his limits, win titles, and proudly wear the Portuguese jersey. He also affirmed that he will continue to support the team and celebrate each of its successes as just another fan.
His retirement marks the end of an international career that began in August 2003, a period in which Portugal won significant titles and solidified its position among the leading powers of European football.
With 234 appearances and 146 goals, Cristiano Ronaldo leaves the national team as the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football, a record that places him ahead of other legends of the sport.
Among his most outstanding achievements are winning a European Championship and two Nations League titles, in addition to numerous individual records achieved while wearing the Portuguese jersey.
