Before the concert, bassist Salvador Repilado, Compay Segundo’s son, and clarinetist Rafael Inciarte highlighted the group’s long-standing connection with the Mexican public and the special significance of returning to perform in the country.

The musicians reminisced about the group’s last performance in Mexico with Compay Segundo, held in Mexico City’s Zocalo, a concert they described as “one of the most significant” moments of their artistic career.

Compay Segundo is considered one of the most important figures in Cuban music and is associated with the international success of Buena Vista Social Club.

Throughout his career, he participated in more than twenty albums, popularized iconic songs like “Chan Chan,” and developed the armonico, an instrument that combines elements of the Spanish guitar and the Cuban tres.

The text reads, “Chan Chan, a journey through bygone Cuba, with the sway and magic of the son and the poetry of Compay Segundo.”

During this visit, the group members emphasized the cultural affinity between Cuba and Mexico and noted that this relationship is reflected in the repertoire they regularly perform for Mexican audiences.

The program included emblematic works from Compay Segundo’s repertoire, as well as tributes to prominent Mexican composers such as Agustin Lara and Consuelo Velazquez.

Special guests at the concert included singer Olga Cerpa, actor Yozvan Santos, and dancer Ana Chaparro, who joined the performance in Mexico City.

After concluding their North American tour, the group plans to return to Cuba to prepare for new international performances and continue promoting their album, “Vivelo.”
