On Monday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro called on countries around the world to work to end the war against Iran and to return to compliance with international law.

In a lengthy message posted on social media, the leftist leader warned about the consequences of prolonged U.S. military actions in the Middle East, a region that could descend into widespread chaos. Petro’s message read as follows:

“We must return as soon as possible to respect for international law. Beyond the affected Iranian population, a revolution there is illusory given the strong popular base that defends the theocratic system, and a return to monarchy is foolishness. Now the Gulf countries are suffering attacks from Iran with little defense.

The alliance that broke international law while negotiations were underway is reduced to the United States and Israel with some European countries. It is the mistaken vision of a clash of civilizations.

The majority of European countries, the same Gulf countries also attacked by Iran, seeking Arab unity, Latin America and Africa could find an immediate return to peace talks and to international law.

The risk to humanity is immense. An imminent genocide. Reason must guide decisions now. Respect for different societies and for human diversity must prevail, and that means permanent dialogue.

The U.S. government today bears a great responsibility before humanity. Its future will depend on it. The banner of democracy and freedom is victorious only if it attracts peoples and if peoples are drawn without being attacked, accompanying their struggles but not replacing them.

The democratization of a society is achieved only through the history and struggles that society undertakes. No one imposes democracy. The military reaction of peoples in alliance against governments alone, as occurred against Hitler, takes place when there is a true threat against humanity.

Nuclear weapons are a threat to humanity, all of them without exception. From the beginning, the nuclear weapon became a form of extortion based on its capacity to destroy human life. The rational path for humanity is to eliminate it everywhere in the world.”
