On Tuesday, the Chinese Institute of Archaeology, Peru’s Culture Ministry, and the Faculty of Archaeology at the National University of San Marcos signed an agreement to expand their cultural cooperation with a joint archaeological research project on the Caral civilization.

The agreement includes fieldwork, scientific research, heritage conservation, and joint training of specialists. This marks the first formal participation of a Chinese archaeological institution in excavations in South America.

The project will initially focus on the remains of Caral, considered one of the oldest civilizations in the Americas, and could later expand to include the study of Inca remains.

The teams will conduct surveys in the Chancay and Supe river basins, where key sites such as the Sacred City of Caral and Aspero are located.

Cultural cooperation complements the economic and diplomatic ties between the two countries, which have maintained a comprehensive strategic partnership since 2013.

During Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Peru in November 2024, cooperation agreements were strengthened, coinciding with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) summit in Lima and the virtual inauguration of the Chancay megaport, built with Chinese capital.

The archaeological project symbolizes the convergence of cultural and economic interests, consolidating the bilateral relationship and opening new opportunities for research and heritage preservation.
