A new eruption of Mount Etna, located on the Italian island of Sicily (south), has forced the suspension of all operations at the airport of the nearby city of Catania until tomorrow, Sunday, due to the large cloud of ash it generated.

Initially, the company managing the air base (SAC) had limited activity at the airport until this Saturday afternoon, but has finally decided to “suspend all flight operations, both arrivals and departures, until noon tomorrow, Sunday.”

“Passengers are asked to check with the airline for the status of their flight before going to the airport,” it requested in a statement released on social media.

The Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) had issued a ‘red’ alert, the highest on the scale, for this new eruption in the morning.

The entity confirms in its bulletin the presence of a volcanic ash cloud 4 kilometers high above sea level moving south, where the city of Catania is located.

But, in addition to this eruption, the Sicilian city has experienced a heavy rainstorm.Etna is a very active volcano that often causes problems in the operations of nearby city airports, the last time being this Thursday.

This year, its continuous eruptions since August 7 caused chaos in the middle of the summer season, as the emission of ash forced the cancellation and diversion of numerous flights in Sicily.
