His visit to India will mark the first by a Canadian prime minister since 2018.
On Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney began a tour of the Indo-Pacific, with a first stop in India, to restart bilateral relations following the diplomatic crisis that sparked in 2023 between the two countries.

The Canadian leader will seek to restore ties after Ottawa accused Indian authorities of killing an Indian dissident in Canada and alleged interference in the North American country’s democratic system.
Canadian officials indicated that Carney will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, convinced that New Delhi is no longer “illegally interfering” in Canada, which has allowed for the reactivation of bilateral dialogue.
Carney will visit Mumbai, India’s financial center, and New Delhi, marking the first visit by a Canadian prime minister since 2018. Carney’s delegation explained that India, with a GDP exceeding US$4 billion, offers opportunities for economic partnership.
The Canadian objective is to position itself as a supplier of energy: oil, gas, uranium, critical minerals, and agricultural products, to supply the growing Indian economy and strengthen cooperation in strategic sectors.
After India, Carney will travel to Australia, where he will meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Sydney and Canberra between March 3 and 6, also marking Canada’s first visit since 2007.
The minister’s diplomatic tour will conclude in Japan, where he will meet with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and economic leaders in Tokyo, seeking to promote investment and accelerate agreements that strengthen both countries’ economic security.
