Prime Minister Gaston Browne has secured a fourth term in office after his Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) won a broad victory in general elections held ahead of schedule.

The vote took place on Thursday, following Browne’s decision to call elections nearly two years before the constitutional deadline. The prime minister, seeking to extend his tenure, campaigned on a platform he described as “a renaissance in changing times.”

According to the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission, 63,330 voters were eligible to cast ballots across 17 constituencies, an increase of nearly 3,000 compared to the previous general elections.

The Electoral Commission stated ahead of the vote that the process would be transparent and well coordinated. The elections were monitored by observer missions from the Caribbean Community (Caricom), the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Commonwealth.

In the last general elections, held on January 18, 2023, the ABLP secured nine of the 17 parliamentary seats, while the remaining seats went to the United Progressive Party (UPP) and one independent candidate.

The outcome consolidates Browne’s leadership and extends the governing party’s hold on power following an electoral process marked by increased voter participation and regional oversight.
