Evangelical churches are pushing a bill in the City Council to ban LGBTQ+ events in public spaces.
São Paulo Pride, one of the world’s largest, celebrates its 30th anniversary this Sunday, amid a backdrop of declining sponsorships and right-wing attacks during the presidential election campaign.

The march on Paulista Avenue will feature the fewest floats in over five years, a 60% reduction compared to last year, a fact that worries the LGBTQ+ community.
Singer Pablo Vittar, an icon of the community, called for demands to be made of brands and reminded everyone that Pride “is not just a party; it’s about coexistence and our rights.”
Pride organizer Claudia Santos explained that the reduction began after Donald Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency and worsened with global economic instability, leading companies to withdraw LGBTQ+ sponsorships.
In addition to the lack of funding, the parade faces attacks from the right wing evangelical churches, which are pushing a bill in the São Paulo City Council to ban LGBTQ+ events in public spaces and the attendance of minors.
Trans councilwoman Amanda Paschoal warned that the ban would be a “self-inflicted wound” for the city, since the event will inject some US$92 million into the local economy.
Paschoal denounced the bill as part of an electoral strategy based on “moral panic,” which reflects the growth of anti-LGBT and anti-trans agendas in Brazil.
This year’s march slogan is “The street calls, the ballot box confirms,” in a political context marked by the confrontation between progressive President Lula da Silva and right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
