‘It is up to all of us to protect and consolidate the Plurinational State,’ Arce said.

On Friday, as Bolivia began celebrating 200 years of independence, President Luis Arce praised the creation of the Plurinational State as one of the country’s most important achievements in its struggle for self-determination.

“It’s been 200 years since Aug. 6, 1825, when the Upper Peru’s united provinces freely decided in Chuquisaca to form an independent republic,” he said.

The plurinational institutions, formalized in the 2009 Constitution after a constituent process held between 2006 and 2008, represents a structural transformation of the country by integrating all Indigenous nations and peoples. Arce emphasized that this new model of statehood was won by the people through struggle. “And now it is up to all of us to protect and consolidate it,” he said.

Arce also touched on the current political climate, reiterating his belief that Bolivians themselves should decide the future of the economic and social model promoted by the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) in the upcoming Aug. 17 elections. Although his party is facing an internal crisis, Arce expressed confidence in the people’s ability to overcome any obstacle.

“We can say that the Bolivian people have triumphed over every challenge they have faced. That is why I am absolutely sure that we Bolivians will overcome any difficulty and move toward the second and definitive independence,” he declared.

Sucre, the birthplace of Bolivian independence, will be the epicenter of the bicentennial commemorations, which include parades, ceremonies, and cultural events. The Bolivian government has declared a two-day national holiday to encourage public participation.

As tradition dictates, at midnight on Aug. 1, the departmental capitals welcomed the new month with the singing of the national anthem, marking the official start of the patriotic festivities.
