The iconic singer and songwriter on June 5 passed away at his home in Buenos Aires after a decade-long battle with Parkinson’s disease, triggering nationwide grief.
This Friday the death of the legendary Argentinean singer, composer and poet, Carlos Alberto Solari, was confirmed. At 77 years old, considered one of the most influential and important figures in the history of Argentinean rock, Solari died in his house at the Ituzaingó municipality of Buenos Aires Province.
“The most sad news, that we would have never wanted to give, is true. Our beloved “Indio“– his body, his physical manifestation – is no longer there. There is no way to express our pain, it is no necessary: it is the same each of you feel”, reported this Friday morning from the his official networks accounts.

On this day of mourning, thousands of fans called themselves to a “mass“, as well was known his massive shows, at Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires and other points of the country to bid farewell to the distinguished singer of Argentinean rock.
Thousands of fans gathered at the historic square to pay their respects, singing loudly the main successful songs that had taken Solari to massive popularity and transformed the pain of loss into a manifestation of cultural validity, in the face of an intense police deployment.
Police Violence Against Fans
The fans encounter quickly turned into a scene of violent repression when the local police force, controlled by City Mayor Jorge Macri, and national security forces under President Javier Milei, launched a harsh repression using tear gas, pepper spray and physical force.
According to local media reports, police wearing full tactical gear, carrying shields, and wielding batons advanced directly against the crowds of grieving families, young children and elderly citizens who had participated in the self-convened event to sing songs and share their collective grief.
When the police forces were questioned about the aggressive tactics in a peaceful national tribute for a cultural icon, the police commander alleged that people were selling alcohol and assaulting officers, an assertion flatly denied by multiple independent witnesses at the scene.
Local Human Rights organizations quickly condemned the official actions, labeling the heavy-handed response by the local administration as an international embarrassment and a direct assault on the right to peaceful assembly.
Meanwhile, a different atmosphere prevailed in other cities of the country, like Cordoba and Rosario, including Parque Leloir, the neighborhood where the legendary singer spent his final years, where thousands of fans transform the sidewalk into a colorful, peaceful sanctuary decorated with flowers, letters, flags, and musical tributes to honor the memory of the deceased rock leader, reaffirming that the cultural legacy of Indio Solari remains a symbol of popular resistance, working-class unity and collective identity across Argentina.
Cultural Myth Born
Born in Paraná on January 17, 1949, and raised in La Plata, Carlos Alberto Solari began his historic musical journey during the mid-1970s. He met the visionary guitarist Skay Beilinson and together they founded the revolutionary underground band called “Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota“ in 1976. Alongside manager Carmen Castro, the collective operated as an independent, countercultural community without fixed members, defying the traditional corporate music industry.
The independent path proved difficult when the band recorded its legendary debut album, titled “Gulp!“, in 1984 at the independent Vitale family studios. The musicians manually distributed their own physical records to local stores across Argentina to gain commercial traction during their early years.
The concerts transformed into massive collective rituals, where thousands of passionate fans traveled across the nation to participate in them. The band released nine acclaimed studio albums and achieved massive milestones, including gathering 70,000 spectators at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires City before disbanding in 2001.
Following the painful split of his original band, Solari continued his record-breaking success a new project called “Los Fundamentalistas del Aire Acondicionado” (Air-conditioning Fundamentalists) with whom the singer released five highly successful studio albums and regularly gathered historic crowds exceeding 150,000 spectators per concert.
The legendary singer openly shared his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease with his loyal fanbase back in 2016, a degenerative condition that gradually deteriorated his physical mobility. The progressive advance of the disease forced him to permanently retire from live physical stages in early 2023. Despite his severe physical limitations, his creative mind remained active, participating virtually via advanced holograms during his band’s live shows.
On May 15, the University of Buenos Aires (UBA, in Spanish) awarded Solari with the Doctorate Honoris Causa for his career and his influence in Argentinean culture, characterizing him as “an artist who made originality an ethic, who built one of the most intense bonds between a musician and his community in the cultural history of the country.”
The official social media account of Indio Solari confirmed today that a massive public tribute will take place this Sunday to honor the deceased artist, which exact time and location of the memorial will be shared exclusively through this official digital platform, in such a way to allow people to arrive on time because it is expected to be massive, like the self-summoned encounter in Plaza de Mayo was today.
Investigation is Underway
Local judicial authorities in Argentina initiated a routine investigation this Friday to determine the official cause of death of the rock legend at his home in the Province of Buenos Aires.
Following standard protocols for deaths occurring at private residences, the Argentinean justice system initiated a formal investigation labeled “Inquiry into the Causes of Death.” The Public Prosecutor’s Office leads the standard protocol inquiry, though preliminary police reports indicate there are no signs of foul play or external violence involved and the cause of death was a stroke suffered by Solari during early hours of this Friday.
The departure of Carlos “Indio” Solari leaves a massive, unmatched void in Latin American music, cementing his status as the most influential figure in Argentinean rock, meanwhile the historical impact of his music continues to unite generations of working-class citizens who refuse to let the repressive measures overshadow the artistic legacy of the beloved singer.
