A devastating fire on a foreign-flagged cargo ship in Qingdao, China, claimed the lives of 25 people, prompting President Xi Jinping to order nationwide safety inspections and a thorough investigation into the incident.
A catastrophic fire broke out this Tuesday on the cargo ship Ocean Melody while it was docked for repairs in the port of Qingdao, China, resulting in the deaths of at least 25 people.
The Ocean Melody, a cargo ship sailing under the Liberian flag, was undergoing repairs at the Beihai Shipbuilding Co. astiller, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, the world’s largest shipbuilder.

The incident occurred around 11:15 A.M. local time at the state-owned Beihai Shipbuilding yard, where the vessel was docked for routine repair and maintenance work and was extinguished by 2:30 P.M. local time thanks to the efforts of emergency response teams.
According to reports, there were 42 people on board at the time of the fire. Twelve workers were successfully evacuated. Five others sustained injuries of varying severity and were rushed to nearby hospitals for specialized medical care. The bodies of the deceased were gradually recovered from the fire-ravaged areas.
Safety Protocols Inspectioned
In response to the tragedy, Chinese President Xi Jinping issued an immediate directive to mobilize all available resources for search and rescue operations and to support the affected individuals. He demanded a rigorous and exhaustive investigation to determine the causes of the fire and hold those responsible accountable.
Additionally, Xi called for nationwide inspections of labor and industrial safety protocols across all ports, shipyards, and production facilities in the country. This move aims to strengthen safety measures and prevent similar disasters, ensuring the well-being of workers and the safety of the nation’s logistics and maritime infrastructure.
The incident highlights the critical importance of stringent safety protocols in industrial settings. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on identifying the root causes of the fire and supporting the families of the victims and preventing future tragedies.
