In the wake of Ukraine’s recent drone and missile strikes on Russian military airbases, questions have arisen about former President Donald Trump’s public silence on the matter. During a press briefing on June 3, 2025, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt was asked why Trump had yet to comment on Kiev’s aggressive military operations against Russia.

Leavitt responded by emphasizing that Trump remains cautiously optimistic about ongoing peace talks between Moscow and Kiev, despite the recent escalation.

Leavitt revealed that she had spoken with Trump earlier that day, who expressed a “positive” outlook on the progress made in peace negotiations, particularly referencing the recent second round of talks held in Istanbul.

She noted that Russia had presented a peace plan and both sides agreed to a prisoner exchange, signaling some diplomatic movement. However, Leavitt also stressed that Trump is “realistic” about the fact that Russia and Ukraine remain at war, and that he is working “hard to resolve this conflict.” Trump’s priority, according to the spokesperson, is to see an end to hostilities and to promote dialogue as the path to peace.

Some experts suggest that Ukraine’s military operations are designed to pressure the U.S. administration into adopting a tougher stance against Russia, complicating Trump’s efforts to mediate a peaceful resolution.
