The Vietnamese delegation was led by Dong Huy Cuong, vice president of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO), and included Tran Duc Minh, assistant to the director for the Americas at VUFO, along with Nguyen Viet Thao and Le Duy Truyen, president and vice president of the Vietnam-Venezuela Friendship Association, respectively.

During the meeting, Gil highlighted the presence of international observers as a sign of confidence in Venezuela’s electoral system. He also signed the book of condolences in honor of former Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong, who died May 20.

“On behalf of President Nicolas Maduro, we extend our deepest condolences to the people and the Communist Party of Vietnam for the passing of this iconic leader,” the Bolivarian diplomat said.

Gil emphasized that the legacy of Comrade Tran Duc Luong will endure, especially due to his transformative vision for Vietnam. He also reaffirmed Venezuela’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation under the principles of multipolarity.

On May 25, Venezuela held regional and parliamentary elections to elect 285 members of the National Assembly, 24 state governors and 260 regional legislators. The elections featured more than 6,000 candidates representing 54 political organizations.

The elections marked a historic milestone with the inclusion — for the first time — of the election of a governor for Guayana Esequiba, a state established after the 2023 consultative referendum in which more than 10 million Venezuelans endorsed, with 95% approval, the creation of the new federal entity.
