The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has strongly condemned what it describes as a “colonial-style threat” against its national airspace, describing recent statements by the US presidency as an “extravagant, illegal and unjustified aggression” aimed at undermining Venezuela’s sovereignty.

In an official statement, the Venezuelan authorities denounced a series of social media posts attributed to the US executive that, according to Caracas, they seek to impose extraterritorial jurisdiction and exert coercive pressure on civil aviation and the territorial integrity of Venezuela, which violates the UN Charter and endangers regional peace and security.

The Venezuelan government accuses Washington of promoting a “permanent policy of aggression” against Latin America and the Caribbean based on colonial motives.

Venezuela defends its sovereignty over its airspace based on the 1944 Chicago Convention and ICAO regulations, rejecting any foreign interference or threat, especially from the United States.

The response comes after accusations of US pressure to suspend flights of the humanitarian program “Plan Vuelta a la Patria”, which has repatriated thousands of Venezuelan citizens stranded abroad. The Venezuelan government insists that no foreign power has the authority to dictate or condition the use of its airspace, and that only its constitutional institutions have jurisdiction over it.
