Saab vows to investigate civilian deaths from U.S. terrorist attack.

On Tuesday, Venezuela’s Attorney General Tarek William Saab called on U.S. Judge Alvin Hellerstein – who is overseeing the case against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro – to respect international law and recognize the absolute lack of jurisdiction of his court to try a sovereign head of state.

Saab labeled the extradition of the Bolivarian leader a “kidnapping” that flagrantly violates international law and the basic principles of diplomatic immunity ratified by the International Court of Justice.

The Venezuelan official noted that the immunity of a sitting president is a universal principle that prevents his prosecution by foreign courts, regardless of any unfounded accusations.

Saab demanded the immediate and unconditional release of President Maduro and first lady Cilia Flores, urging the international community to condemn these acts, which he called state terrorism and an affront to the sovereignty of nations.

“All human rights violations executed against the head of state, his wife, and the Venezuelan people must cease,” the attorney general emphasized.

He confirmed that his office has appointed three prosecutors to investigate the dozens of civilian and military casualties during the U.S. military aggression against Venezuela carried out on Jan. 3, calling the events “war crimes.”

Saab denounced that this armed incursion, executed in a cowardly and criminal manner by U.S. forces, represents the first aggression by a foreign power against Venezuelan soil in more than 200 years.

Furthermore, the attorney general expressed the unrestricted recognition and support of the Citizen Power and the Republican Moral Council for the appointment of Delcy Rodriguez as Venezuelas’ acting president.

Saab stressed that this measure falls within the principle of cooperation between public powers established in Article 136 of the Constitution, offering all necessary institutional collaboration to guarantee democratic peace and the nation’s stability in this crucial hour for the homeland.

Finally, Saab greeted the installation of the new parliamentary leadership for the 2026-2027 period and reaffirmed his call for civic-military, popular and institutional unity.

He also highlighted the maturity of the Venezuelan people who have kept the country in order despite the aggression suffered and assured that Venezuela’s democratic institutions will remain firm in defending their dignity and demanding justice before the corresponding international bodies.

During the same event, lawmaker Giuseppe Alessandrello highlighted that the National Assembly will continue its legislative work to elevate rights, guarantee well-being and protect the people, emphasizing that this act solidifies Venezuelan institutions. The lawmaker presented the formal document to record the installation of the National Assembly and its leadership.

For his part, the Ombudsman, Alfredo Ruiz, condemned the “systematic and vile” aggression of the U.S. government. He stated that this action breaks international agreements and tramples international humanitarian law and human rights law, as well as numerous ratified conventions.

He highlighted that this aggression, part of a series of prior attacks, uses the pretext of stealing the South American country’s wealth and has caused the murder of dozens of Venezuelans, in addition to the kidnapping of President Maduro.

Ruiz celebrated the installation of the National Assembly and its willingness to legislate and exercise oversight and cooperation functions. He offered the Ombudsman’s Office’s readiness to cooperate with the National Assembly, public powers and acting President Rodriguez.

He reaffirmed the duty to promote and defend human rights, justice and peace, ensuring the availability of all Ombudsman’s Office headquarters and personnel to work in a coordinated manner for Republic’s values.
