The Attorney General of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, publicly rejected the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of El Salvador’s recent response, which declared “inadmissible” Venezuela’s formal request to intervene on behalf of 252 Venezuelan nationals arbitrarily detained in El Salvador without charges or due process.

The Venezuelan Public Prosecutor’s Office had submitted a petition on March 30, 2025, urging Salvadoran authorities to guarantee the human rights and legal protections of Venezuelan citizens transferred from the United States to El Salvador without any legal basis. More than 80 days later, the Salvadoran court dismissed the request, citing failure to meet formal requirements and improper diplomatic channels.

Saab condemned this response as “cynical” and “evasive,” accusing the Salvadoran judiciary of hiding behind bureaucratic technicalities to shirk its constitutional duty to uphold justice and protect detainees’ freedoms. “We will not accept citizens being subjected to arbitrary detention, without trial, without defense, and without due process,” Saab declared firmly.

The text reads: The Attorney General of #Venezuela , Tarek William Saab, expressed his rejection of the response issued by the Supreme Court of Justice of #ElSalvador , which denied his request to intervene on behalf of 252 Venezuelan citizens who were illegally detained.

The Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office emphasized that the Salvadoran court ignored the substance of the habeas corpus petition filed by the detainees’ lawyers, refusing to address the glaring violations of legal norms and human rights.

Saab criticized the court’s demand for proof of already widely publicized facts, such as the detainees’ transfer to the Central Anti-Terrorist Organization (CECOT) amid a media spectacle, calling it “an act of complicity with legal aberration.”

Saab highlighted that the Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office has located and interviewed 116 relatives of 118 detained Venezuelans, information already made available to Salvadoran lawyers and judicial authorities. “We will not rest until the dignity and freedom of each of our citizens are restored,” he affirmed.

This case exemplifies a blatant disregard for international law and human rights principles by El Salvador, which Venezuela has reported to multilateral organizations. The arbitrary detentions and judicial evasion reflect broader patterns of repression against Venezuelan migrants and political dissidents abroad, exacerbated by imperialist pressures and regional geopolitical tensions.
