Jorge Rodríguez, President of Venezuela’s National Assembly, strongly condemned the detention of more than 200 Venezuelan migrants in El Salvador, who were unjustly held in a maximum-security prison after being deported during former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.

Rodríguez directly accused U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele of being responsible for this situation, comparing their actions to the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany.

“A Nazi-Style Concentration Camp”

In a fiery speech, Rodríguez did not mince words, labeling El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) as a “Nazi concentration camp.” He emphasized that these migrants—who only sought a better life—are now victims of crimes against humanity, their only “crime” being the legacy of historical figures like Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Miranda running through their veins.

The session grew emotional as family members of the detained migrants were present, expressing their anguish and desperation. Rodríguez called for national unity to demand the return of their compatriots, urging Venezuelans not to turn a blind eye to this injustice. A signature campaign was launched to raise awareness and pressure for their release.

Denouncement of Human Rights Violations

Lawmakers also condemned the human rights abuses faced by Venezuelan migrants under Trump-era immigration policies. They urged international organizations, including the United Nations, to intervene and reject these arbitrary actions.

Deputy Rosa León stressed that this situation represents a grave violation of human rights and a direct attack on the suffering of affected families. Meanwhile, Jesús Brito reminded the assembly that migrants are “not objects or merchandise” to be treated with contempt in the 21st century.

A Unanimous Condemnation

The National Assembly’s unanimous condemnation highlights the urgent need to address the plight of Venezuelan migrants and protect the rights of those seeking refuge abroad. The crisis not only reflects political tensions between Venezuela and the U.S. but also the deep humanitarian crisis gripping the South American nation.
