On Wednesday, July 16, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons made history as Suriname’s first female president, ushering in a new era of leadership in this sister nation of Latin America. Venezuela’s Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, representing the Bolivarian Republic, traveled to Paramaribo to attend the inauguration, symbolizing the strong bond and shared vision between both countries in the struggle for social justice, regional integration, and sustainable development.

Rodríguez arrived in Suriname on the evening of July 15 and was warmly welcomed by Surinamese government officials and Venezuela’s ambassador Ayerim Flores Rivas. Upon arrival, she conveyed President Nicolás Maduro’s greetings and heartfelt congratulations to President Simons and the people of Suriname.

This diplomatic mission underscores Venezuela’s commitment to peace, unity, and common prosperity for the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, in line with the Bolivarian and 21st-century socialist ideals.

The visit reinforces agreements between Venezuela and Suriname in critical sectors such as energy cooperation, trade, and especially shared stewardship over the Amazon rainforest—an emblematic priority for protecting the environmental heritage of the region against imperialist exploitation.

Known affectionately as “Jenny,” President Geerlings-Simons at age 71 brings decades of experience as a medical professional and public servant. She holds a doctorate from Anton de Kom Universiteit and advanced degrees in epidemiology and leprosy management. Since 1996, she has represented Paramaribo in the National Assembly, earning respect for her commitment to health and social welfare.

She underscored her priorities: strengthening education, promoting productive sectors, combating poverty, and diversifying Suriname’s economy.

Recognizing the oil industry’s potential to transform Suriname’s economy, President Simons emphasized citizen participation as essential for guiding responsible development. She called for decentralization, fiscal discipline, and investments in youth and healthcare to build a just society where social rights and economic success go hand in hand, principles resonant with Venezuela’s own Bolivarian Revolution.

In solidarity with Suriname and all peoples of the Global South, Venezuela celebrates a moment of historic progress that strengthens the block of nations committed to peace, equality, and sustainable development rooted in the interests of the peoples, not elites.
