FM Gil called on the international community to take effective measures to compel Israel to adhere to international law.

At the United Nations General Assembly meeting on Tuesday, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil urged the international community to take concrete and effective action to halt Israel’s crimes in the occupied Palestinian territories.

“We call for an end to the transfer of weapons, ammunition and equipment to Israel, the occupying power, when there is reasonable cause to suspect they will be used against the Palestinian population,” Gil said, referencing General Assembly Resolution ES-10/24, adopted on Sept. 18, 2024.

The Venezuelan diplomat called on U.N. member states to reject the double standards that undermine the credibility of multilateral institutions and allow Israel to act with total impunity.

“These double standards weaken the legitimacy of the international system and those who insist on protecting Israel’s illegal and criminal actions,” he said, reaffirming the Bolivarian government’s historic and unwavering commitment to the Palestinian people’s cause, their right to self-determination, justice and an end to the occupation.

In that regard, he expressed Venezuela’s support for a just, comprehensive and sustainable solution based on international law, U.N. resolutions and the U.N. Charter.

“We support the creation of a sovereign and viable Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with West Jerusalem as its capital,” Gil stated, also reiterating the need to guarantee Palestinian refugees’ right to return.

He also warned against the risk of normalizing Israeli violence, citing the ongoing humanitarian tragedy in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and southern Lebanon.

“We will not allow this massacre to become routine. The normalization of crime is unacceptable,” the Venezuelan diplomat warned, directly accusing the United States of complicity in the genocide being carried out against the Palestinian people.

“The U.S. government must set aside its political calculations and allow the Security Council to act. Its persistent obstruction has emboldened Israel to continue its policies of apartheid and extermination,” Gil emphasized.

Gil stressed that remaining silent in the face of this situation “is complicity,” adding that the future of the multilateral system depends on the collective courage of member states to enforce the U.N. Charter without exceptions.

Finally, Venezuela’s top diplomat expressed support for the General Assembly’s efforts to stop the tragedy in Palestine and thanked other nations, such as Qatar, for their support in opposing genocide.

“Now is the time to fulfill the promise enshrined in the U.N. Charter. The Palestinian people have endured this injustice with dignity for far too long,” he concluded.
