Venezuelan Indigenous Communities Elect Their National Assembly Deputies

The indigenous peoples and communities of Venezuela hold this Sunday the election of the three deputies to the National Assembly (Parliament, AN) that correspond to them and nine regional parliamentarians, sugun stipulate the constitutional laws of the Bolivarian State.

This day of 1 June affects 77 municipalities, where 95 polling stations and 118 polling stations were set up. One principal deputy and one alternate shall be elected to the legislative councils of the states of Amazonas, Anzoátegui, Apure, Bolívar, Delta Amacuro, Guayana Esequiba, Monagas, Sucre and Zulia.

For the National Assembly, one principal deputy and one alternate will be elected from each region, distributed as follows: Western Region (Zulia, Mérida and Trujillo), Southern Region (Amazonas and Apure) and Eastern Region (Anzoátegui, Bolivar, Delta Amacuro, Guayana Esequiba, Monagas and Sucre).

In the nine states with indigenous population, 6,451 spokespersons participate, previously elected in community assemblies that took place throughout Venezuela during April.

Those spokespersons are the representation of 169,451 indigenous people from 3,952 communities, equivalent to 82% of the total, and are charge ones of voting to elect their deputies who will have the power to represent their peoples and communities; to enforce their regulatory systems.

Article 186 of the Constitution states that “The indigenous peoples of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela shall elect three deputies in accordance with the electoral law, respecting their traditions and customs. Each Member shall have one alternate, chosen or elected in the same process».

This electoral process complies with Article 125 of the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which recognizes the rights of indigenous peoples, including their form of social and political organization, strengthening their self-determination to take the reins of their political representativeness.
