Coercitive measures violate the provisions of the United Nations Charter, FM Gil pointed out.
On Monday, Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Minister Yvan Gil called for the immediate end to unilateral sanctions against his country and demanded reparations for damages, injuries and losses suffered by all nations affected by such arbitrary measures

“States responsible for imposing coercive measures must immediately cease these illegal actions. They must also provide appropriate guarantees against repetition, as well as reparations for all damages, injuries and losses inflicted on affected states and their populations,” he said during a special debate ahead of the 79th session of the U.N. General Assembly.
“For over a decade, the U.S. government and its European allies have imposed more than 1,000 unilateral coercive measures against Venezuela,” he added.
“These arbitrary measures now represent the greatest obstacle to implementing national development plans and have severe humanitarian consequences, threatening the lives and well-being of people,” Gil stated.
“They restrict access to health care services, medicines, medical supplies, equipment and vaccines, as well as their development, procurement and distribution,” he emphasized.
“Unilateral coercive measures, including those imposed as tools of political or economic and financial pressure against any country—particularly, though not exclusively, developing nations—are illegal, cruel and inhumane,” the Bolivarian diplomat declared.
The text reads, “Unilateral coercive measures have also had an impact on the situation in Palestine, said Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil, who pointed out how they aggravate the situation of the Palestinians.“
“Sanctions blatantly violate the principles enshrined in the U.N. Charter, fundamental norms of international law—including international humanitarian law and human rights law—as well as provisions of the Declaration on Principles of International Law Concerning Friendly Relations Among States, in accordance with the U.N. Charter, and the Charter of Economic Rights and Duties of States, as outlined in General Assembly Resolutions 2625 (XXV) and 3281 (XXIX), respectively,” Gil explained.
The Venezuelan diplomat also demanded an end to the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, in place for over six decades.
“We urge the U.S. government to immediately and unconditionally lift the blockade against our sister nation and remove it from the arbitrary, unilateral list of so-called state sponsors of terrorism,” Gil said.
Additionally, he condemned what he described as an “escalation of intimidation tactics, particularly in the form of so-called tariffs,” referencing measures taken by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
“Tariffs… pursue objectives unrelated to trade, as they effectively seek the same goals as the unilateral coercive policies the U.S. government has embraced for decades,” he argued.
Gil warned that continued sanctions would harm the global economy and prolong human suffering unless they are “completely, unconditionally and immediately terminated.”
