The Government of Venezuela congratulated Nicaragua this Sunday on the commemoration of the Day of National Dignity, which evokes the patriotism of General Augusto C. Sandino, who 98 years ago refused to sign the Espino Negro pact and opposed a US military intervention in the Central American nation.

“On behalf of President Nicolás Maduro, we extend our sincerest congratulations to President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo on the occasion of the Day of National Dignity, which takes place this May 4 in Nicaragua,” said Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil in a message published on Telegram.

indicated that this date commemorates the feat of Sandino in his struggle against “US imperialist intervention and the indomitable resistance of the Nicaraguan people to defend their dignity,” noting that today, Nicaragua raises high “the flags of self-determination, pride and national sovereignty.”

National Dignity Day is celebrated every May 4th to commemorate the day that national hero Sandino (1895-1934) refused to sign the Peace of Espino Negro, also known as the Pact of Espino Negro, which ended the constitutionalist war in Nicaragua.

The pact proposed general disarmament, the creation of the National Guard, and the supervision of elections by U.S. Marines, which Sandino refused.

In this regard, Rosario Murillo, Co-President of Nicaragua, announced that the National Assembly will meet on May 4, National Dignity Day, in the place where the pact of treason to the fatherland was formed.

During the session, decrees and laws emanating from the Constitution, as well as constitutional reforms related to homeland symbols and national dignity will be announced. The objective is to declare that Nicaragua lives in dignity, security, justice, prosperity, work and peace, following Sandino’s example of dignity.
